Perched on the river at West India Quay, just along from Pizza Pilgrims, sits Drake and Morgan’s new(ish) site, The Sipping Room. It originally opened back in Spring this year as The Bothy but has since re-branded. After an incredibly disappointing soft launch visit back in May, I was kindly invited back to give The Sipping Room another try for lunch. I’m pleased to say that this visit was infinitely better.
I arrived a bit early but was welcomed to a large table and greeted with some complimentary smoked almonds which are some of my favourite nibbles. One thing I love about The Sipping Room is the wonderfully cosy vibe that they’ve managed to achieve. There’s blankets on the chairs, fur throws dotted around, lots of candles and plants on the table – all equating to a very trendy, but at the same time warm and welcoming, atmosphere.
Oddly they’ve opened another site just across the footbridge in Canary Wharf called The Pagination which, from what I can see on their website, has an identical menu to The Sipping Room. If the website is to be believed that seems a shame considering just how close they are to one another.
The Sipping Room doubles up as both a bar and a restaurant. The food menu is served all day and the cocktail menu is reasonably priced with a great selection. I particularly liked the tasting wheel and that each cocktail is clearly labelled as fruity, sweet, sour, spicy etc. I didn’t have a cocktail this time because I went for wine instead but the Bramble Forest cocktail I had last time with gin, lime, raspberries, blackberries and coriander was delicious and I’ll definitely be returning to try some more of their cocktails.
We shared the chorizo scotch egg with the smoked paprika mayonnaise (£6.25) and the salt Szechuan pepper squid with lemon mayonnaise (£6.75) to start. Both were tasty, the scotch egg was soft in the centre and the smokiness of the mayonnaise was lovely. There was a plentiful portion of squid, especially if you’d ordered it for one person and though I can’t say that I’d have known it was Szechuan, it was still very moreish.
For main course we both chose the buttermilk chicken burger with chipotle mayonnaise (£11.75) and shared a portion of their Roman fries with parmesan, truffle and rosemary (£3.25). It was a decent burger with lots of fried chicken and a sweet brioche bun and the chips had a generous amount of truffle and rosemary on them, giving them a distinctive flavour that I really liked. My only qualm is that for £11.75, I think that a burger ought to come with fries or at least a salad, even if they’re just the standard ones and you have to pay to upgrade them, but this burger comes on its own on the plate. I’d happily eat this again though and we both enjoyed our burgers.
I was too full (and a bit drunk) by the time we got to dessert to manage anything (which basically never happens) so I guess I’ll just have to go and visit again! Whilst I wouldn’t describe The Sipping Room as a destination restaurant for food, it’s a solid contender if you’re in the area and hungry. It’s one of those places that you’d go to meet friends for drinks and then just end up having food, and you’d be happy that you did. I’ve heard that they do brunch too and their cocktails certainly lend themselves to the perfect setting for a brunch with friends that doesn’t break the bank so I’ll hopefully be returning to review that some time too.
Nearest stations: Westferry or West India Quay DLR are both a short walk and Canary Wharf on the Jubilee Line is less than a 10min walk too.
