Review: DF/Mexico

Review: DF/Mexico

For someone who’s quite a big fan of Mexican food (and to be honest, Mexico in general after my holiday there last year), I haven’t tried as much of it in London as I’d have liked. DF/Mexico is somewhere I added to my list ages ago but hadn’t really gotten round to visiting. My friend and I were looking for somewhere cheap around Shoreditch/Old Street to catch up on a sunny Thursday afternoon and after a quick Google, up popped DF/Mexico. Sold by the promise of frozen margaritas and cheap tacos, off we went.

They have self service machines which is I guess how they manage to keep their prices nice and low, but the staff are attentive and there to help if you have any issues. It was pretty empty when we arrived (it was about 3pm on a Thursday) so we got our pick of table, bar stool or booth and walked in with no wait. We got carried away chatting and they didn’t mind us taking ages, though I can’t guarantee that would be the same if it was a busier time.

We shared the chorizo nachos to start with and then I had the grilled steak tacos with grilled cheese and chipotle salsa which were so good, just the right amount of everything! My friend went for the pork burrito (also pictured).

The frozen margaritas are about £6.50 – I highly recommend the raspberry and hibiscus one, so refreshing. If you’re not drinking, the bottomless soft drinks are good value at £2.50 with a choice of 3 flavours – not sure about chia seeds floating in the lime one though, they didn’t really add much. The main courses are around £6-8 and are big portions so you can have a filling, tasty meal for well under £20 with a drink. I think they do discounts on a Monday too.

The food is quite messy to eat and it’s fairly loud inside, so maybe not a first date destination but I liked it so much I went back with another (skint) friend who was visiting London the following week. I can definitely see this becoming a regular spot when I need a casual bite to eat with friends.

Nearest station : Liverpool St/Shoreditch High St (There’s a branch near Tottenham Court Road too)

Price: £
