Top 10 Plates of 2017

Top 10 Plates of 2017

2017 has been a very exciting year for me personally, (I started blogging for one), and spent my year eating so much great food in some fabulous places. Here’s a roundup of my ten favourite plates that I’ve eaten this year. They’re not listed in any particular order – it was hard enough just picking ten as it was!

1.       Al Pastor, El Pastor

You can read the full review of my visit to El Pastor in London Bridge here, but their Al Pastor taco with its melt-in-your-mouth pork shoulder, pineapple, coriander and onions was amazing. One of the best tacos I think I’ve had.

2.       Orkney scallops with cep fregola, black garlic and pancetta, City Social

The perfect start to our meal at City Social, the scallops were fat and full of flavour and the smoky pancetta and black garlic amongst other things made it different to any other scallop dish I’ve had. Read my full review of Michelin-starred City Social here.

3.       Scallops from Les 110 de Taillevent, Festive Taste of London

Although I haven’t been to their actual restaurant yet, the small scallops dish we had at Taste of London Winter Edition in November had to make the list. The cider and cream sauce was so velvety, and the scallops tasted wonderfully sweet. I definitely need to visit their restaurant in 2018!

4.       Goat Massaman, Smoking Goat

I’ve not written the full review up for Smoking Goat yet (coming soon!), but I couldn’t miss this dish off my top ten. The goat just fell apart the second you touched it. Can’t wait to eat this again.

5.       Beef shin pappardelle, Padella

Okay, so having Padella on the list isn’t exactly original but the beef shin ragu pappardelle there really is the best I’ve had. The rich meaty sauce just clings to the wide, silky ribbons and though I’ve had other similar dishes, this still wears the crown.

6.       Nduja pizza, Pizza Pilgrims

I loved my first experience of Pizza Pilgrims and though they’re very well-known, I still felt that their Nduja pizza with its fluffy crust and fresh tomato sauce deserved a spot on the list. Full review of their West India Quay site here.

7.       Chicken themed “bites” starter, The Manor

Part of the Laurent-Perrier tasting menu we did in the Summer was a plate of “bites” – a chicken liver mousse, chicken butter, fresh bread and a pork and fennel salumi. Everything on the plate was delicious, despite not sounding like a plate to get that excited about. You can read about the rest of our tasting menu here.

8.       “Chicken Ruby”, Dishoom

I loved everything at Dishoom when I tried it for the first time at the start of the year and the chilli cheese toast and chilli chocolate pudding were also close contenders for this list but the Chicken Ruby won out for me.

9.       Lamb, fried polenta and pomegranate, Hackney Bureau.

A real hidden gem, I was so pleased to find Hackney Bureau. It’s very much off the beaten track and it doesn’t even take card payments! The lamb was so well-cooked that it just melted away the second your fork reached it and the pomegranate brought a real freshness to the rich red wine sauce. Read my full review here.

10.   Crunchie dessert, Hawksmoor

Probably my favourite part of our whole meal at Hawksmoor was the desserts and chocolates. There’s a full review coming soon but this rich chocolatey dessert was one of the best I’ve had.

What were your favourite plates of 2017? What do I need to make sure I try in 2018? Let me know in the comments.

    • I’ve still got my full review of Hawksmoor to write up – should be up in the next couple of weeks! Dessert was amazing!
