Top 5 Favourite November Finds

Top 5 Favourite November Finds

With Taste of London’s winter edition and my Birthday celebrations, November is always a very food-filled month for me – usually actually worse than the Christmas period! Having missed October’s monthly round up (oops!) I have more than enough highlights to add in to my November food finds (as well as a lot of restaurant reviews to write up…!).

NB. None of the posts on my website are sponsored/invites/gifts unless clearly stated, I’m just enthusiastic about good finds!

1. The Boathouse, Ormesby, Norfolk

Ormesby Broad in Norfolk

First up is The Boathouse in Ormesby, Norfolk, a beautiful country pub/restaurant. I went with family on a sunny but breezy Sunday for their carvery – something I’m never that fond of – but the carvery was actually very good. They gave you generous portions of local, well-cooked meat (or cooked-to-order fish) and fresh vegetables., Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets etc. It’s worth a visit for the gorgeous scenery alone, it’s honestly one of the most beautiful settings to eat and drink. You can see why they’re popular for weddings – they have an outdoor terrace, a jetty which must make for the most stunning photos, and inside is all wooden beams and cosy corners.

2. Chocolates by Eloise

Box of chocolates from Taste of London

As always at Taste I bought a lot of bits to take home but one purchase that really stood out amongst all the others was the box of truffles and bar from Chocolates by Eloise, a South London based chocolatier. As you well know if you read this regularly, I’m a huge chocolate fan and these were beautiful. They had such different and unique flavours. Some of my favourites were the fig and orange 70% bar and, in truffles, the burnt orange and basil, blackcurrant and rosemary, and the raspberry and fennel. YUM.

3. The Ginger Pig, Wanstead

I’d previously bought the odd sausage roll and bits from The Ginger Pig in Borough Market and often saw their lorry with hanging animals arrive first thing in the morning when I was walking to work. Having recently moved East, trying the Wanstead branch of the famous butchers has been a top priority so when my Delicious magazine recipe called for 1.5kg of beef shin, I knew straight where to go. It is not cheap, but it is great quality. As well as the shin I got a beef and chilli sausage roll and a pork and sage pork pie – both very tasty. They’ve got several branches so see if they’re near you if Wanstead is too far out of your way.

4. Hawksmoor’s “Tributes” (aka Rolo’s but not Rolo’s)

I’m in the process of writing up a full review of Hawskmoor and my meal there but I loved these chocolates that you have as petit fours or to take away from there so much that they deserve their own special mention. They are the richest, most decadent caramel cased in a crisp dark chocolate shell and they are divine. We bought a box of 8 to take away, they were that good.

5. French Beef Braise with Gruyère Toasts

The recipe was in November’s Delicious magazine, and though it took me a lot longer than the recipe said (closer to 5 hours than 3 for me), the result was delicious.  I used the aforementioned Ginger Pig beef shin and it lasted us a few days, so we had the last two portions (once we’d eaten all the cheesy bread) with homemade pappardelle. Lots of effort but totally worth it. Tastes a lot better than it looks in my photo!

Side note – the Comté I used to top the toasts with the Gruyère, from Waitrose was also incredible and I later nibbled my way through the whole block… oops.

What were your food and drink highlights in November? Let me know in the comments below (which should be easier now I’ve moved to WordPress).

Somewhat of a London institution for meat eaters, see if Hawksmoor Spitalfield restaurant lived up to the hype in No Mean Feast’s review.
